Ex-employee cops plea to embezzling $100K from dental practice

Source: DrBicuspid.com (reporting Port Huron Times Herald story)

Jennifer Malone, a former employee of Smile Zone Dental in Fort Gratiot, Michigan, admitted to embezzling a substantial sum from the dental office where she worked. In her role handling financial tasks for the practice, she diverted roughly $100,000 over the course of 2022 and 2023, using the money for personal purchases rather than legitimate business expenses. Because she had access to the practice’s payment systems and records, she was able to disguise the theft long enough to accumulate a six-figure loss.

The scheme unraveled when discrepancies in the practice’s finances prompted closer scrutiny of deposits and accounting records, ultimately pointing back to Malone’s activities. Prosecutors charged her with embezzlement, and on April 8 she agreed to plead guilty to a reduced charge in connection with the theft, as reported by the Port Huron Times Herald. Her case underscores how vulnerable small healthcare practices can be when a single trusted staff member controls key financial functions without strong oversight. For practice owners, the incident highlights the need for routine reconciliation of collections to bank deposits, segregation of financial duties, and periodic outside review to deter and detect similar embezzlement schemes before losses escalate.
